Watch Out For The Salt!

Have you ever taken the time read the nutrition section on the Noodles packs? Did you ever realize that there was so much sodium in noodles! It can range anywhere between 800 mg to way over 1000 mg. Keep in mind that our suggested sodium intake should be no more 2,300 mg. For those who suffer from high blood pressure and hypertension, the sodium intake should not go over 1,500 mg.

On average, we Americans eat 3,300 mg of sodium a day because salt is in everything we eat: bread, cheese, fast food, soup, and even cereal. No more than 10% of salt comes from the salt shaker, and only 10% of salt comes naturally in foods. That means that the other 80% is just from processing.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has decided to approach the government as well as the food industry to reduce levels of salt in processed food - which is pretty much any packaged food. The American Medical Association recommended that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should limit the amount of salt allowed in food. Also, the AMA asked the FDA to remove the status of salt as a substance that is considered to be safe and deem salt as a food additive. If the FDA were to listen to the AMA, they would have to quickly find a replacement for the additive and flavor enhancer.

The FDA has never solicited commentary but the organization has mentioned that they are open for a hearing on the health issues of high sodium intake. There have also been discussions between the Salt Institute (didn’t think there was such a thing, did you?) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Salt Institute has pushed for the DHHS to finance a comprehensive study about the health effects of salt. But here is no word as to whether that study will be conducted or not. Funding is really an overall deciding factor. The Center for Food and Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) has had their budget cut from 47.6 million to 25 million in four years. And the CFSAN is an organization where most food regulations take place.

Many thousands of Americans die each year because of gradual health effects that were caused by high sodium diets. The FDA also says that they have paid attention to the sodium issue by placing sodium on the nutritional value label and by defining low salt products. So some are a bit weary of believing that the FDA is interested in a hearing, especially since the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has mention a sodium problem in processed food more than 23 years ago.

In addition to the AMA, other groups like the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine (NASIM) and the governments National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) have know for at least 20 years that a high salt consumption can lead to high blood pressure, hypertension, and contributes to heart disease (the No.1 cause of death in America) and stroke (the No. 3 cause of death America). The NHLBI conducted a study in 2004 that concluded that 150,000 lives could be saved on a yearly basis if sodium levels were decreased by half.

Encryption is the process of storing information in a way so as to make it unreadable without special knowledge. Encryption has been used to protect communications and secure information for centuries, but only organizations and individuals with an great need for secrecy had made use of it.

Julius Caeser is the first known user of an encryption system. His system was known as Caeser’s keys. He wanted to send messages, but did not want the messengers to read them. To prevent this, he used an alphabetic substitution in his messages; replacing A with D , B with E , C with F , etc. The recipient of the message was aware of the secret of the encryption, so for him it was very straightforward to decipher the message.

An example of a sentence using Caeser’s keys is below. It is not difficult to see the pattern.
Plain Text: THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE LAZY DOG
Cipher Text: WKH TXLFN EURZQ IRA MXPSHG RYHU WKH ODCB GRJ

Obviously, this method of encryption is not very secure. Though encryption has been around for thousands of years, only in the last century have we seen great advancement in the field of cryptography.

The invention of computers changed the face of cryptography completely. Computers were able to calculate much faster than the people who worked on them, and suddenly an encrypted message could be broken within a few minutes on a normal PC, and consequesntly the message was no longer secure. In response to the need for new and secure methods of encryption, the cryptographic world flourished in the latter part of the 20th century. In the mid-1970s, strong encryption emerged from the preserve of secretive government agencies into the public.

In cryptography, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES); also known as Rijndael, is a block cipher adopted as an encryption standard by the US government. Rijndael is used worldwide and analysed extensively. Rijndael became effective as a standard May 26, 2002. As of 2006, Rijndael is one of the most popular algorithms used in symmetric key cryptography.

The cipher was developed by two Belgian cryptographers, Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen, from whose surnames the term Rijndael was conceived. The cipher was submitted to the AES selection process, stating that Rijndael was designed based on the following three criteria:

1) Resistance against all known attacks
2) Speed and code compactness on a wide range of platforms
3) Design simplicity

Rijndael was evaluated by the National Security Agency (NSA), based on its security, its cost and its algorithm and implementation characteristics. There were several candidate algorithms, but Rijndael was selected as it had the best combination of security, performance, efficiency, ease of implementation and flexibility. NSA stated that Rijndael was secure enough for US Government non-classified data. In June 2003, the US Government announced that Rijndael may be used for classified information.

It is the mark of good quality software if it uses the Rijndael encryption method to secure information.

One such program is Info Manager. PortaWhiz Info Manager uses the Rijndael encrytion method to keep your information secure. The program gives you one place on your Pocket PC your desktop where you can organize and store all of your important information into neat folders. This means that all your important information is stored together, in neat and tidy bundles; which are easy to retrieve at any time you require. Only the bearer of the administrator password will then possibly be able to access it.

The program is available at www.portawhiz.com http://www.portawhiz.com .

Exhibitions serve many purposes, they can showcase new talent and fresh ideas from up and coming interior designers often alongside the work of already well established and highly sought after designers in the industry, they highlight the latest fashions and trends, spark new creative ways of thinking, provide opportunities to network and increase business sales and of course they offer the chance to view the work of some of the best interior designers in the world.

The following list represents just three Interior Design Exhibitions that regularly take place in London:

Dating Advice: Don’t Let Her Hurt Your Feelings

Part of being a real man and not falling into the nice guy “friend zone” is not letting her hurt your feelings easily. Never let her think she hurt your feelings or struck a nerve with you even when she actually does. Just like the age old saying goes, Never let em see you sweat . When she knows she can hurt your feelings with her words she’ll see that as insecurity. And when you really examine it, it is insecurity.

Women can make some really belittling comments without realizing it and sometimes purposely to strike a nerve and test you. That’s right; women will actually use these belittling comments to see if you can take it. It’s a test to see how much of a man you are. They usually don’t even realize they are doing this kind of thing to test us, but make no mistake about it - IT’S A TEST. If you are secure enough in yourself, there’s nothing to feel hurt about. You are sure of yourself and nothing she can say or do can bring you down.

The next time a woman says or does anything that hurts your feelings, remember to BE A MAN and let it roll off your shoulders. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t express yourself when she does or says something disrespectful. You can call her out without letting her know it hurt your feelings.
